John Powell (1882-1963): "In Old Virginia" Concert Overture (1921)

John Powell (1882-1963) was an American composer from the U. S. South whose concert works often incorporated the folk music of Virginia. Among his compositions include a symphony, a number of tone poems and other short orchestral, chamber and instrumental works. His most famous work is one of his earliest, the "Rhapsodie Negre." This upload, the concert overture "In Old Virginia" was composed in 1921 and is based upon Virginia folk melodies. It has been badly neglected for over 50 years.

This recording is taken from a Music Sound Book 78 rpm set with Hans Juergan-Walther conducting the Hamburg Philharmonia.
