Piano Concerto No. 5
Pancho Vladigerov, piano

I - Allegro ma non troppo
II - Andante sostenuto
III - Allegro molto

Pancho Vladigerov is perhaps one of if not the most respected Bulgarian composer and pedagogue of the 20th century. Juxtaposing native Bulgarian musical elements and late-romantic idiom, he bridged the gap between the flourishing Western musical tradition and the rich though isolated musical culture of the Balkan states. One hears a startling array of influences in his music which in turn unfluenced and was admired by a great number of 20th century composers, including Strauss and Shostakovich.
His output for the piano includes numerous solo works and 5 concerti. This recording was performed by Vladigerov himself.
