Taken from a late 1950's Mosfilm version of the opera (directed by Vera Stroyeva), this video captures
Reizen towards the end of his distinguished stage career. The aria and following scene were severely
abridged for the film, but the sonorous voice is in top form, and (as always) Reizen's singing and
presence are absolutely authoritative.

98. Giuseppe di Stefano - E lucevan le stelle (Studio recording)
Giuseppe di Stefano (24 July 1921 - 3 March 2008) was an Italian operatic tenor whose career spanned
from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. He was also known for his long association with Maria Callas,
with whom he performed and recorded many times, and with whom he was briefly romantically involved.
Here he sings the aria 'E lucevan le stelle' from Puccini's Tosca. This is a 1950s studio recording, his best
studio version in my opinion. His best ever Tosca performance in my opinion was the live 1952 Mexico
City one with Callas.

1939 -

103. Eugene Conley and Licia Albanese sing the Act I love duet ("Bimba dagli occhi pieni di malia,"
"Stolta paura l'amor," and "Vogliatemi bene") from Puccini's "Madama Butterfly." This was a
Metropolitan Opera radio broadcast of January 17, 1953. Other cast members include Frank Valentino as
Sharpless and Margaret Roggero as Suzuki. Fausto Cleva is conducting.

104. Jan Peerce and Licia Albanese sing the act I love duet from Puccini's "Madama Butterfly." This was
recorded at the Rome Opera in 1956 with Vincenzo Bellezza conducting. A highlights album was released
also with Renato Capecchi (Sharpless), Anna Maria Rota (Suzuki), and Fernando Delle Fornaci (Goro)
but it was too little, too late; RCA should have recorded the FULL opera with Albanese and it should
have been done in the 40s with some of the other great artists RCA had at its disposal (perhaps a
younger Peerce as Pinkerton, Robert Merrill as Sharpless, and Rise Stevens as Suzuki - Imagine that!).

That would have been the definitive recording of the opera. The Met wanted to use her in the 1949
recording with Tucker but that was before the days Columbia and RCA traded artists with each other and
she was under exclusive contract with RCA so they were forced to use Steber.

She was born in 1902 in Rio de Janeiro(Brazil). She went to France in 1922 where she studied with
Reszke. Four years later, she had her "debut" in the Theater Constranzi di Roma. After her tourneé
through Europe, she was invited by Toscanini for apresentations with the Philarmonic Orchestra of New
York. In 1937, she had her first role in The Metropolitan Opera House of New York, as Manon
(Massenet).

She was one of the most respected artist of the Metropolitan Opera house (New York). There, she made

155 apresentations, being 33 as Mimi, a character from "La Bohème"(Puccini).
She died in 1999 when she was 96 years old in The United States.
Bidú Sayão ( 1902-1999) - great Brazilian soprano, who made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1937,
beginning a career that spanned many decades. She sang in many Villa-Lobos premieres and important
concerts. Her performance of the aria from Bachianas Brasileiras no. 5 is famous - in the words of Alfred
Heller, "when Sayão sang it, it was otherworldly, a great spiritual experience." It was sad indeed to hear
of her death in March 1999.

Many of her songs were popular American songs of the day. This justly renowned recording of the aria from "Tsar's Bride" (sung in German) is from a part of her very wide repertoire perhaps less often heard today.
